CLOSING IN ON DAMASCUS
THE ALLIED TROOPS WERE REPORTED IN CAIRO YESTERDAY TO BE NEARING THE GATES OF DAMASCUS, AND EVENTS ARE ALSO DEVELOPING FAVOURABLY TO THE ALLIES ON THE COAST, WHERE STEADY PROGRESS IS BEING MADE TOWARDS BEIRUT,
While there is always the possibility that the Vichy troops may make a stand half way between Sidon and Beirut, it is hoped in Cairo that the Beirut-Damascus line will soon be in British hands.
This will leave Tripoli, Homs and Aleppo as the chief towns still held by Vichy.
Yesterday's British G.H.Q. com- munique said progress bas again been made by the Allied forces' in the coastal sector, while fur- ther important positions have been captured just south of Damascus. In

LULL ON CHINA FRONTS
(SPĘCIAL TO "CHINA MAIL")
The Chinese military spokesman in Chungking, reporting a lull in the. fighting on all fronts, said this indicated that major battles were looming, with both sides prepar- ing.
The spokesman pointed out that Japan is in a dilemma, not know- ing whether to go west or south, and not having sufficient strength to do either.
Ho confirmed reports that more than 100 Japanese war veggo'a are manoeuvring off the Cheklang coast.
