BERLIN ON TURKISH TREATY
In Berlin the conclu- sion of the German- Turkish Treaty is regard- ed as meaning Turkey's inclusion in the political system of the Axis, says the Berlin correspondentĮ of the "Stockholm Tid- ningen."
In regard to the declaration in the Pact that earlier Turkish en- gagements are not affected, the correspondent says: "Political quarters in Berlin interpret this as meaning that if, contrary to expectations, the pact comes into conflict with earlier treaties, then naturally the most recent docu- ment will have preference.”
The correspondent adds: "Des- pite Turkey's natural interest in Syria, it is stated in Berlin it is wrong to suppose the pact will affect military operations there, these being the affair of French.
the
"Berlin does not think France will be obliged to seek Ger- man aid."
It is considered certain in Ber- lin, says the correspondent, that Turkey did not-sign" without con- sulting the Soviet. *
"If the Soviet advised the Turks to sign, this is regarded as a good omen for a Russo-German
settlement, which is expected to eventuate at the end of the pre-
sent week."Reuter.

While there is always the possibility that
the Vichy troops may make a stand half way Collier
between Sidon and Beirut, it is hoped in Cairo that the Beirut-Damascus line will soon be in British hands.
This will leave Tripoli, Homs and Aleppo as the chief towns still held by Vichy.
Yesterday's British G.H.Q. com- munique said progress has again been made by the Allied forces in the coastal sector, while fur- ther important positions have
EIGHTH SUCCESSIVE NIGHT RAID ON GERMANY
STRONG FORCES of British-bombers on Wednesday night attacked ports in north- west Germany and the naval base at Brest, where the battleships Scharnhorst and Gnei- senau and a Hipper class cruiser are still berthed.
Despite variable and often cloudy wea- ther, the British aircraft reached their objec- tives, says the Air Ministry news service.
