NAIROBI TRIAL: SIR DELVES BROUGHTON IN WITNESS BOX

"I WANT YOU TO TELL the Judge and jury whether you had anything to do, directly or indirectly, with the death of the Earl of Erroll."

So said counsel when Sir Delves Brough- ton, who is on trial in Nairobi charged with the murder of the Earl of Erroll, entered the witness-box yesterday after the Judge's re- jection of the plea that there was no case to

answer.

Sir Delves Broughton, referring to his service in the last War. said he had a pensionable disablement from the effects of sunstroke, one of which rendered him unable to drive at night.

He spoke of a pre-marriage agreement with his present wife. that if either fell in love with another they would release each other.

The public followed tensely accused's account of his reactions on realising his wife had fallen in love with the Earl of Erroll.

No Quarrel

There was no

quarrel at

any time between accused and Lord Erroll or with his wife.

He was very sorry for his wife and although he regretted her attachment with Erroll, he realis- ed she had alt her young life in front of her, while he had not.

He hoped that his wife, by going away three months with Errof. might stop loving Erroll, but Erroll neither approved this idea or the idea that Erroll him- self should go away.--Reuter.

CALL FOR EMBARGO

The China Campaign Commit- tee in London has decided to organise deputations consisting of! eminent British personages of all parties to call on Mr. Anthony Eden, the Foreign Secretary, and Mr. John Winant, the American Ambassador in London, and the Dutch Government in London, urging complete embargo on ex- port of oil to Japan by the British, United States and Dutch Govern- ments.

Owing to Mr. Winant's absence, the plan is held up until his return. Reports from Chungking that eleven important Chinese organisations have appealed to President Roosevelt for an em- bargo on the supply of oll to Japan are being followed wi'h the greatest interest. Central News.
