London's West End from an early hour was crowded with holiday-makers, many from provincial centres, and theatres and cinemas did a tremen- dous business.

Signs Of Spring

Although transport services were unable to provide any ad- ditional facilities many Londoners were able to take advantage of the first Bank Holiday which has been observed for a whole year by getting out into the nearby country where signs of Spring now abound.

In London, streets were crowd- ed and places of entertainment were full. The area' near St. Paul's destroyed by fire some time ago in the first raid in which the Germans concentrated on the use of incendiary bombs, was inspect- ed by many visitors from country.

Animated Crowds

the

In the suburbs allotment hold- ers seized the opportunity to do some extra "digging for victory." In many places traditional fairs were held. The preponderance of of uniforms in crowds everywhere was noticeable.

Although the demeanour of peo- ple was possibly more restrained than on an ordinary Bank Holi- day, the crowds were most anim- ated and obviously determined to make the most of the well-carn- ed respite before returning, factories and offices with strength to make good the whole of pro- duction lost in the holiday break.
