Vital Factor In Result Of War

IF GERMANY RUNS short of oil she must stop fighting. It is with this belief uppermost in mind that the R.A.F. shapes its operations. And the R.A.F. know a trick worth two of bombing oil wells.

What this trick is was explained, among other things, by the Minister of Economic Warfare, Mr. Hugh Dalton, at a press con- ference in London yesterday.

The British blockade, said Mr. Dalton, is working well and the enemy is growing un- comfortably short of certaimcommodities.

CRUSHING DEFEAT OF JAPANESE

A crushing defeat, involving over 20,000 casualties, was in flicted

who on. Japanese troops carried out an attack in northern Hupeh province, in central China, last week, according to an official despatch received yesterday by the Chinese Embassy in London.

British patrols were again ac tive to the

north and south of Kassala inflicting casualties on the enemy without loss to them- The despatch adds Chinese selves, stated yesterday's G.H.Q. troops captured Chennankwan, in communique in Cairo."

The safety margin of all in Germany has not yet been touched, but she is using more oil than she is producing asza result of R.A.F, attacks on sup- plies, storage and the transport system, and disappointing sup... · plies are obtained from Russia.

Mr. Dalton said he recommend- ta turgets in Germany to the Air Ministry and always kept oil near

the head of the list.

Italian Target No. 1

In Italy, Bari, had always been the R.A.F.'s number one target, which was economically more im- portant than Milan or Turin, as the most important oil stocks in all Italy were kept there.

Speaking of the difficulty of transporting the Rumanian oil surplus to Germany, Mr. Dalton

said that as crude oil was not "Very Inflammable it was non- sense to suggest, bombing the Rumanian oil wells.

Rather wait until Germany had spent labour and time refining and transporting it, and then bomb it.

Italy First

Italy would feel the pinch even before Germany, said Mr. Dalton, because she had no synthetic oil plant and there was little doubt her supplies were growing short and she had to get replenishment from Germany.
