MITTELHAUSER STEERS MIDDLE COURSE
Beirut, To-day.
GENERAL MITTELHAUSER and M. Gabriel Puaux, the French High Commissioner in Syria, have issued a proclamation stating that the armistice conditions signed by France do not change the situation of the mandated territories, and conse- quently they have ordered the cessation of hos- tilities.
The French flag will remain flying and France will
continue her mission in the Levant.
BRITAIN RECOGNISES DE GAULLE
London, To-day. Britain has decided to recognise General Charles de Gaulle, founder of the French National Committee in Lon- don.
This was officially announced last night in the following terms:-
"The Government recognises Gen- eral de Gaulle as the leader of all free Frenchmen wherever they may be who rally to him in support of the Allied cause." - Reuter,

The French community Africa has cabled General de Gaulle approving the decision of the French National Committee to continue the struggle until final victory is achieved and placing themselves at the Com- mittee's disposal.-Reuter.
WORK FOR NATIONAL DEFENCE

LONDON, TO-DAY. MR. ERNEST BEVIN, MINISTER OF LABOUR AND NATIONAL SER- VICE, HAS APPEALED TO ALL BRITISH MEN AND WOMEN, WHOSE NORMAL ACTIVITIES WERE INTERRUPTED BY THE WAR, TO PARTICIPATE IN WORK FOR THE NATIONAL DEFENCE.
The Government will recruit and train those workers.

The Army still needed particularly specialists and workers for civilian defence.
Earlier, in the House of Commons, Mr. Bevin announced that 10,700 per- sons were at present being trained for special work by the Government. -Havas.
PEIPING PRECAUTIONS

Peiping, To-day. Special measures aiming to forestall incidents between nationals of belli- gerent countries residing in Peiping. have been taken by the Police Bureau. Members of the police Special Ser- vice Section have been dispatched to various districts in Pelping in order to watch the actions of foreign
residents.
It is understood that the Special Section has also been instructed to watch the movements of folga missionaries and church workers here. -Havas,
Reuter understands that the French administration of the two mandated territories of Syria and Lebanon will continue as before, and the French forces will remain in the country.
Relations with Palestine will not be materially affected.

FORCE MAJEURE
London, To-day. Discussing the part Germany and Italy probably played in the Russia/ Rumania agreement over Bessarabia and Bukovina, "The Times" says that no doubt they both knew what Russia had in mind, but it is to the interest of neither that Soviet Russia should command Rumania's oil-fields and increase her influence generally there.

STRIKE IN THE 'SHANGHAI TIMES"

Shanghai, To-day. The Chinese mechanical staff. the "Shanghai Times" went on strike on Thursday afternoon following de- mands for increased cost of living
allowance.
As a result the paper failed to appear in the streets yesterday.

GERMANS USING DELAY-ACTION BOMBS

In their raids on Britain, the Ger- mans are now apparently using de- layed-action bombs.
