PHRASE BOOKS FOR INVASION OF

:

ENGLAND

London, To-day. THE GERMANS ARE PLANNING the invasion of Britain with typical thoroughness, one example of which is seen in English-German phrase books which are be- ing distributed to the troops, some of which have fallen into the hands of the British military authorities. One of the most striking things about the books is that the

German soldier, when facing a British civilian, sudden-. ly becomes a stickler for the truth. All through the book he is told to say: "If you do not tell me the truth you will be shot."

Some of the questions seem to be intended for use when cross-examin- ing civil authorities-such as "Are

you the Mayor? Open all cupboards," OF

and "Where is the cash?"

ог

OF 25 YEARS AGO

The comfort of German troops is (From the "China Mail" files), not forgetten. If he feels ill

June 25, 1915 off-colour, the German soldier, by turning to the right page, will be able to say "Give me pilla" or " have the stomach-ache."

It is also interesting to note that personal standards of cleanliness are to be maintained. People are ordered to wash "two shirts, one pair of pants and three pocket-handker- chieves."-Réuter.

TASS DENIES TREATY NEGOTIATIONS

WITH TURKEY

(SPECIAL TO "CHINA MAIL")

Moscow, To-day. The official Tass Agency dismisses, as totally baseless, foreign press re- ports stating that Soviet Russia and Turkey were negotiating for a treaty. Reports claimed that the Turkish Prime Minister, Bey Sukru Saracoglu, was on his way to Moscow for that purpose. Havas.

An R.A.S.C. officer writes: "I won- der if the fame of Ludwig has yet reached you? He was a fine big Ger- man of striking appearance who, for some reason or another, took Tommy's

fancy.

"Every morning from the trenches of the Battalion of Guards that was opposite his there came a chorus in unison of "We-want-Ludwig!" And Ludwig would solemnly climb up on top of the trench, bow his acknow- ledgement and retire into the trench.

"Then the business of the day be- gan, but not a shot was fred until Ludwig was safe behind cover."

Germany's rejoicing over the cap- ture of Lemberg has been dampened by a Berlin communique announcing a series of reverses in the Russian theatre of war, where the Germans have had to retreat here and there.

Shelling has been ceaseless north of Souchez. The Germans have resum- ed their shelling of Arras.

Nuns and nurses were killed when an ambulance of the Holy Sacrament was hit by shells.
