MR. T. V. SOONG ON SPECIAL MISSION

TO

AMERICA

MR. T. V. SOONG, HEAD of the Bank of Canton and the Bank of China, is on his way to America, according to authoritative reports received by the "China Mail." The object of Mr. Soong's mission-he is not on a vacation

trip cannot be obtained from official sources.

The China Mail" learns, however, from usually reliable sources, that Mr. Soong has been entrusted with an im- portant task by the Chinese Govern- ment in Chungking.

It is believed his purpose is to ne- gotiate a third loan from the Ameri- can Government,

Mr. K. P. Chen, General Manager of the Shanghai Commercial and Sav- ings Bank, who negotiated the two previous loans left America and is said to be in Manila where he met Mr. Soong prior to the latter's depar- ture to America last week.

Reports over the week-end stating that Mr. Soong is to be appointed Ambassador to America cannot confirmed.

ANDERSON

SHELTERS PROVED

London, To-day. Reports from technical experts show that the small steel shelters known as Anderson shelters, which have been supplied free in vast numbers, pro~| vided a striking degree of protection during the recent air raids.

Although many large bombs fell close to these shelters, no occupants were injured.

In one case the crater of a 500-lb. bomb was only 30 feet from such a shelter occupied by two adults and two children. Although the house was badly damaged the shelter stood
