MAN IN THE STREET RENAMES CHURCHILL
The man in the street has nick- named aggressive Prime Minister Winston Churchill "Winnie.” *.
But for telephone, operators Mr. Churchill has a private nick- name="Mister. Winch."
He combined the first letters of his two names for a "nom-de- phone" to deceive wire-tappers, it was disclosed.
Now, he may have to coin another.
SEQUEL TO ACCIDENT
Mr. P.. Edwards, of No. 4, Hillwood Road, was fined $15 by Mr. Q. A. A. Macfadyen at Kowloon this morning when summoned for failing to pro- duce his driving licence when re- quested and for driving without due care and caution.
GRIM STORY OF FATAL BEATING OF A THIEF
At the Supreme Court this morning before the Chief Justice, Sir Atholl Mac. Gregor, Fung Mun, a junk foki, was charged with the manslaughter of Cheng Kwai on April 15.
Mr. J. P. Murphy, assistant Crown Counsel assisted by Sergeant N. B. Fraser prosecuted.
The jury was composed of Messrs. G. P. Charlton (foreman), S. E. Lav- roo, L. A. Lee, Lau Chan-fan, Hsu Ping-hsun, Cheng Yuk-sing and F. C. Samy,
Mr. Murphy said accused was a foki on a cargo boat. On the day his boat was tied to another which in turn was tied to the Wo Shing Wharf at Yau- mati.
The mistress of the boat, accused and another foki, Kong Fook, slept on board. At about 2.45 a.m., the mis- tress went on deck and saw a strange man (deceased) at the stern of the boat, presumably a thief.

Deceased was found at about 5 a.m. by a watchman and taken to hospital but he died at 9.15 p.m, the same day. Dr. E. L. Gosano would say that the cause of death was multiple fracture of the ribs and rupture of the liver and spleen.
Accused denied that he beat deceas- ed but the watchman would say that when he brought the deceased back to the boat, he asked if the man was a thief. Accused replied that it was he who had beaten deceased but others had done so too.
