“WE NEED WAVE AFTER WAVE OF PLANES FROM THE UNITED STATES,” DECLARED ·· THE PREMIER, M. PAUL REYNAUD, IN A DRAMATIC BROADCAST APPEAL TO PRESIDENT ROOSEVELT LAST NIGHT.

"We know the place held by ideals in the lives of the American people. Will they hesitate to state they are against Nazi Germany?" Previously, M. Reynaud had wired to President Roosevelt stating: "The hour has come for 90 per cent. of the world's population to unite against the mortal danger threatening us all.

It was stated at the White House yesterday that President Roosevelt's Charlottesville speech la considered a complete answer to M. Reynaud's request for United States assistance.

It was added that M. Reynaud's cable was not delivered until after President Roosevelt's re- turn from Charlottesville, and it was only a coincidence that his speech was so completely to the point. Reuter.

EXPLOSION IN BRITISH STEAMER

Buenos Aires, To-day.

It is now learned that 43 have been arrested in connec- tion with an explosion on board the British ship Gas- cony here on Wednesday.

One man was killed, four were in- jured and the ship was set on fire by the explosion, which is believed to have been caused by time-bombs.
