German Batteries Shell The Centre Of Paris

ENCIRCLEMENT

DRIVES INCREASE IN VIOLENCE

PARIS, TO-DAY.

FIGHTING HAS DEVELOPED A NEW HIGH INTENSITY ON BOTH SIDES OF THE LOWER SEINE TO THE WEST OF PARIS AND THE GERMANS CONTINUE TO MAKE SLOW-PROGRESS IN SPITE OF THE STUBBORN- EST RESISTANCE.

New British divisions just landed from England have swung into action against the German threat south of the Seine, but the Germans have likewise been heavily reinforced, and armoured units have been pushing steadily over the Seine to exploit the situation round Evraux. Meantime, the other great German thrust, south- wards from Rheims continues to gain ground, though the French are contesting the terrain inch by inch.

Paris is under direct shell-fire and in spite of the of- ficial declaration that Paris proper is an open town and will not be defended, the Germans have been shelling the centre of the city.

Bridges Over Seine Destroyed

London, To-day. It is reported that all bridges over the Seine on the 60-mile line from Rouen to Mantes have now been destroyed:by Allled bombers.

French Communique

Paris, To-day.

A French communique says that on both sides of Paris the battle is in- creasing in violence.

Czech aviators and a new batch of Czech infantry troops are joining the fighting line in the immediate future, the Czech National Council informed Mr. Winston Churchill and M. Reynaud.-Hàvas.

London, To-day. According to Czechoslovak circles in London, a Czechoslovak Air Force. has been established in France and will be part of the Czechoslovak Army now fighting in France.

GERMAN REPORT ON TURKISH TRADE PACT

Berlin, To-day.

The official news agency an- nounced last night that an agree- ment has been reached for an ex- change of goods with Turkey to the value of 21,000,000 Turkish pounds. It was added the agree- ment would be signed within the next few days.-Reuter..

FRENCH ORDER FOR 10,000 LORRIES

New York, To-day, It is reported that France has order- ed 10,000 lorries, costing between- $15,000,000 and $20,000,000, from the General Motors Corporation, and the Chrysler Corporation. Britain is en- quiring for another 10,000 lorries Reuter,

It is officially announc- ed that Paris will not be defended.

This means, in M. Reynaud's words, that the French will fight in front of Paris and behind Paris.

The announcement is a logical sequel to the city being declared, an open town, presumably in order to save it from destruction and bom- bardment. Reuter,
