OF CHUNGKING

CHUNGKING, TO-DAY. A VIVID DESCRIPTION OF THE JAPANESE AIR RAID ON CHUNGKING, IN WHICH CASUAL- TIES ARE UNOFFICIALLY STATED TO HAVE BEEN 300 KILLED AND 200 INJURED, MOST OF THEM CIVILIANS, WAS GIVEN BY THE HAVAS CORRESPONDENT WHO HIMSELF MIRACUL- OUSLY ESCAPED DEATH WHEN HIS OFFICE WAS PRACTICALLY DESTROYED.

The Havas correspondent left his office earlier than usual owing to the fact that the usual radiogram emissions could not be received. Had he stayed in the office as late as usual he would have met certain death.

Reconstruction began immediately after the destruction throughout the city, as engineer corps set to their task even before the all clear had sounded, while ambulances rushed to rescue the wounded and coolies began clear- ing streets littered with debris...

Apparently the bombing utterly failed to demoralise the population, and only a few hours after the raid, life was going on as usual, although the bombed districts still presented a horrible picture,

Disregard for possible danger was mostly responsible for the large casualty list..

Broke Rules

Ricksha coolies were seen lying dead with their fares, as well as many pedestrians who, instead of seeking shelter in dugouts, stayed in the open to watch.

Had the population kept to the rules announced by the authorities, it is probable the casualties would have been far less. Havas.

Chungking, To-day. Chungking University was badly damaged and several students killed and injured when Japanese aircraft raided the western outskirts of China's, wartime capital at noon yes- terday. Valuable scientific instru- ments in the laboratories were de- stroyed.

The Central University, however, is reported to have been untouched.

Several fires were started on the outskirts but on this occasion the bombing was further away then the previous day's attack.

A second group of nine machines passed Chungking but did not drop any bombs though they were met with anti-aircraft fire. A third group of Japanese planes never came within the limits of the city.

··Pilot Wounded

The Chinese now claim that two Japanese bombers were shot down in Tuesday's raid by anti-aircraft fire.

It is stated three groups of bombers, of 36, 26 and 36 machines, respectively, as well as several scouting planes, took part in Tuesday's raid,

Few Fires

Most of the bombs dropped yester- day afternoon were demolition bombs, hence, few fires were started.

Many unexploded duds are still awaiting removal at several places.

Chungking, To-day. Mr. Sun Han-pin, dean of the Fuhtan University, was killed during the Japanese air raid over Chung- king on Monday when the Fuhtan University campus was demolished.
