THE SPIRIT OF THE MERCHANT

REDUCED DIVIDEND

the with for The surplus to be dealt 1938 Account is $1,228,070,67 out of which has been paid an interim dividend of $5 per share. We now. recommend a final payment of $7 per share-making in all $12 per share which will absorb $600,000 and the transfer of the balance of $628,070.87 close to underwriting suspense account to 1938 and previous years. This represents a reduction of $1 per share in the dividend and much as we regret having to advocate it, we feel shareholders will agree that, in view of the heavy shrinkage of over $93,000 or nearly 8 per share-in income from Interest, this course is but wise,

The balance of $1,888,808.44 at credit of the 1939 Account allows of the payment of an interim dividend of $5 per share far that year, leaving an amount of $1.638,960
