IRON CROSS HEROES ON OUR OUR SIDE
Germans who were awarded the Iron Cross in the last war are now in France wearing the uniform of the British Army. And their. one com- plaint is that this time they are fight- ing with picks, and spades instead of maching-guns and rifles, writes a war correspondent.
They are Auxiliary Military Plon- eers a labour unit-engaged in vital work in the B.E.F. lines of communi- cation.
"
Altogether there are more than 500 Germans, and others are on the way. I found them singing "Tipperary."
"They never sing German songs,' the C.O. of one company told me. "Most of them want to forget about their sufferings in Germany.
I can give no names as most of these men still have relatives in Nazi territory, but one fair-haired sergeant told me he was nearly beaten to death. in a concentration camp after the Nazis had stolen his business and his money. He found refuge in England.

"My wife le still in Germany," ho told me. "I got a letter from her Just before wär broke out, saying that if it happened she wanted me to join the British Army."
Another had been a prosperous solicitor. "I was lucky to leave the concentration camp alive," he said. "Let me get at them!"
TT.S ARE TO GET DRUNK
Group temperance leaders in Okla- homa City delighted the populace when they announced that they would get drunk on beer "in the interest of science and public morality.”
Highlight of the teetotallers' noble experiment will be when they attempt to walk along a straight line.
They are breaking their temper- ance vows and gallantly risking hang- overs to prove that beer sold in Okla- homa City is intoxicating and there- fore should be banned.
