GENERAL GAMELIN-A PERSONAL SKETCH
"On the field of battle, as in the hours of waiting; whatever the mano-- euvres of the enemy, in the war of nerves as in the war, of armies, once more we will hold firm, and we will win!".
This is General. Camelin's message to the troops for 1940, and his whole career shows that they are the weighed words of a man of action.
General Gamelin, small, taciturn, looking 10 years younger than his 67 years, holds a higher position than any general in French history.
The new post of Chief of General Staff of National Defence in 1938 put him at the head of France's land, sea and air Forces; and, by a pre-war ar- rangement, he became Generalissimo of the Allied armies at the outbreak of war.
General Gamelin has a brilliant re- cord both of staff and active service. A long association with Joffre led to his drafting-as a 42-year old ma- jor on Joffre's staff-the Orders which led to the victory of the Marne.
He left Joffre's staff to command a be- battalion of chasseurs, and he came a brigadier-general at the age of
44.

He led
the French 9th Division which relieved the British Fifth Army under General Gough at Noyon. On that occasion, General Gamelin's divi- sion held six German divisions on an eleven-mile front for four days, March 22-26, 1918.
This was, perhaps, the most ef- fective German attack of the whole war, and there was a danger of being out-flanked by the enemy. General

In 1925, General Gamelin had the hard and unpleasant task of putting down the Druse rebellion in Syria, and in spite of small and ill-equipped Forces he succeeded in established peace within a few months.

General Gamelin joined the Supreme War Council in 1930 and replaced General Weygand Chief of the French Staff in 1935. Among his major achievements are a new system of mobilisation by "groups" instead of age "classes" which has proved a triumph of efficiency.
He is also responsible for the im- at the penetrable secrecy in which outbreak of this war, unlike 1914 the Allied plans were kept.
General Gamelin's chief characteris- tic is an imperturbable coolness. His determination not to waste human ma- terial on hazardous military adven- tures is well-known.
