TENNIS LEAGUE OPENS IN BRILLIANT WEATHER

Last Year's Leaders Win With Ease KOWLOON TONG START WELL; BEAT STRONG RECREIO TEAM

ARMY LEAGUE IN FULL SWING

The Army Tennis League opened a day earlier than the Colony League and con- siderable activity has been evident at Sookunpoo for the last two days.

On Monday an "A" Division match was played between 5th., R. A. and Middlesex Regiment which the form- er just won by 6 sets to 3. Lt. Guest and Sgt. Waldron made a great effort for the losers and won all three sets, but they received no support.

THE HONG KONG TENNIS League season for 1940 opened yesterday in a blaze of sunshine with five "B" Divi- sion matches.

All went as expected although some of the teams were expected to do better than they actually did. Leading teams of last season, South China and Chinese Recreation Club, both won their games with something to spare, while Kow- loon Tong, with a decisive win over a strong Recreio team, afternoon but at this stage of the sea-

this

son it is most difficult to discuss pros- pects with aby authority more espe- cially as even at a late hour yesterday afternoon, captains had still not decid- ed on their pairings.

A preliminary survey of such teams as are available reveals some excel- lent players in a number of clubs and although C.R.C. and South China, due to their great experience of, and peculiar aptitude for League tennis, should again fight out the top position, they are not likely to have matters all their own way by any means, ·

C.R.C. LOOK GOOD

C.R.C., under the captaincy of Pang Oi-lam, one of their most promising youngsters, have a nice blend of youth and experience. In the latter cate- gory come evergreen F. K. Lau and of Iu Tak-lam, players with years League tennis behind them. This team is going to be an extremely difficult 2-one to beat.

I like the look of the Recreio “A”. team and I foresee this side causing Razack a few upsets before the season is over, while C.B.A. are another team that the stronger outfits will do well not to disregard.
