NAVAL OFFICER FINED IN MANSLAUGHTER CASE

CONVICTED ON A CHARGE of manslaughter as the re- sult of a motor accident, Kenneth Duncan Bruce, 24- year-old engineer officer attached to one of HM. Ships, was fined $500 by the Chief Justice, Sir Atholl MacGregor, this morning and granted six months in which to pay.

Bruce was found guilty of the mans- laughter of Lam Shing-chi, on April 4, when he was alleged to have driven "recklessly without regard to life and limb" in Hennessy Road.

London, To-day. A telegram from Chungking, dated May 11, received by the Chinese Em- bassy in London, states:

"Despatches from the Honan and Hupeh fronts estimate the Japanese sustained over 10,000 killed and wounded up to yesterday noon. The battle is still proceeding. "The Chinese have seized huge quantities of ammunition and sup- plies."-Reuter.
