Unfortunately, West chose a fine opening the club ten, whereupon the defence could not be prevented from winning a club trick and two diamonds.

Artificial Ace-showing conventions| Since he had bid the full strength of work out very well on those hands his hand, South then simply returned where one player can determine that to five spades and North quite pro- a Small or Grand Slam can be made provided his partner holds a certain number of Aces. However, we find two serious flaws in the wholesale Ace-showing convention. The first is that since four notrump is the bid used to ask partner to show his Aces, Under our system of bidding, South the partnership is committed to a would make his Slam try by bidding contract of at least five-odd. Our four diamonds (still below the game second objection is that not infre-level). North might then respond quently a Slam cannot be made even with four hearts to show the Ace, but though it is found that the combined South would then sign off with four hands hold all four Aces. OVERCOMING HEAD RAISING

BY BEST BALL

These shut in winter days afford

a good opportunity for the player to practice his putting stroke on the parlour rug. The stroke is stressed because at this time the golfer might improve his tech- nique by concentrating alone up- on it. Forget the idea of a tar- get to putt at temporarily and devote the attention to merely stroking the ball freely under- neath the head as an anchor. Try to stroke the ball so that the club- face will contact the ball at pre- cise right angles, follow through along this line but MAKE CER- TAIN you do not raise the head in the process. Let the ball go where it may, provided it is not lofted into some choice bric a brac and stroke the next ball in the same way.
