ALLIED MINING WAAND SUBSEQUENT

NAZI ACTION

London, To-day. COMMENT ON THE ALLIED mining of Norwegian waters and the subsequent brutal German in- vasion, has been received from South America, Italy and the United States.

The Buenos Aires newspapers accept the mining as a violation inevitable in war, and stress the in- creasing effectiveness of the Allied blockade.

The "Nacion" justifies the Allied ac- tion' owing to Norwegian inability to enforce her rights, and points to the Scandinavian pro-Allied sentiment.

In Rome, the "Giornale d'Italia” pu- blishes a despatch from its London correspondent reporting surprise Germany's action considering Nor- way's hostile attitude to the Allies following the minelaying, unless was a precautional measure against Allied Intervention.

it

The correspondent states that this was indeed the Allied plan to close Germany's gateway for supplies.

He adds Government circles declare Britain had respected the neutrality laws to the extreme in the hope that

Norway could impede Germany's vio- lations, but owing to the vanity of these hopes it was necessary to act.

VATICAN COMMENT

Provision or this type of clothing for all three Services is giving a big job of work to the British fur dress- ing and dyeing Industry, but that is only one side of the story. Since war began, trade in processed furskins has been well maintained, and many countries are now anxious to give Bri- tain the business previously done with Germany.

There is thus a link between, the Navy "ammy" coats and the cargoes of lamb and other furskins which it convoys to Britain for processing, and convoys away from Britain when

the skins are dressed and dyed.

discussion, having been so repeatedly guaranteed by the belligerents. But in- stead of this, the conflict had been brought on to the ground of violation of the neutrality of neutral territory

itself.

U.S. VIEW

A New York despatch quotes the' "Baltimore Sun" on the British min- ing of Norway.

"Neither governmental reactions nor German interpretations will affect the belief of those who see the Allies as a bulwark against the spread of totali- tarianism, and its own consistent, and deliberate flouting of the law of ethics.

"Whatever their judgment on the --Anglo-French methods of war they will continue to hold that the Allies' purpose remains what it has been proclaimed to be the ultimate es- tablishment of principles which the smaller nations of Europe would themselves wish to see prevail.

We, unlike Norway, are a re- mote and powerful natlan, but the serious violation of one neutral's rights always threatens to lead on to athars.

"We must be strong enough in the diplomatic field and in arms to pré- vent any flagrant invasion of our own neutral rights. We must also be pre- pared, when peace comes, to put for- ward a decisive effort to recreate a world in which the rule of order wil be restored and in which economi and political conditions will that it will hold
