PROGRAMME STARTS 3 P.M. AND INCLUDES JUNIOR FOOTBALL CLUB GAME

(By "SCRUM-HALF”)

CLUB “A” WILL START favourites in to-day's Seven- A-Side Rugby Tournament on the Club ground, Happy 'Valley, though continuance of the rain that is falling as I write these notes will be to the advantage of Police "A", the holders.

The Pipes and Band of H. M. 2nd Bn. The Royal Scots, by kind permis- sion of Lt.-Col. D. J. McDougall and › Officers, will commence their pro- gramme at 2.30 p.m. and at 3 p.m. the first of the quarter-finals will be played.

The following is the full programme: 2.30-3-Band Selections..

team scores.

I liked the look of 8th Heavy Regt. "A", but a heavy ground will not suit their speedy trio, Richards, Marsh and Keeble. Sappers have a good all- round side, and Waite and Artingstall are expected to be playing, and, with match-winning Birrell, these two should see them through to the next round.

Bank are likely to prove much too good for Civil Service, though high tackling may give Taylor the chance he will be waiting for. In Day, Car- ruthers and Aitkenhead Bank have a very fine trio of attacking backs and I cannot see Charter holding up all three, despite his deadly tackling.

Club "A" cannot afford to take the rugged Police "B" team too lightly--- they did very well to beat Taikoo in the closing 'minute-but they should win with a good deal in reserve.

PROBABLE, SEMI-FINALS

If my reckoning is correct Policej "IA" and Royal Engineers will meet in the first semi-final and this is

The

In the other semi-final Club "A" will receive their first real test, and Bank are going to take some beating, though the heavy ground will minimise their pace. Club, how ever, have a better balan- ced side and what, they may lack in speed is counterbalanced by fitness and a much superior forward trio, Club should win a close game.

A Final between Police and Club "A" will be worth going a long way to see, but I don't think there can be much doubt regarding the result, as Police, who should be well outplayed at forward, are likely to be on the de- fensive for the most part of the game, Taylor's positioning will have to be much better than it has been- if the Police line is to be held against the fast-moving Club back division. Much of Club's success, however, will depend on Henderson's service to Thomson.

PUTTING CONCENTRATION

By BEST BALL

A golfer cannot divide his atten- tions on the putting green at the actual moment of stroking the ball and expect favourable results. The line to the hole, the speed of the green and the power to impart to the ball; all of these, should have been determined beforehand. Some golfers take longer at sizing up these conditions than others. Francis Ouimet for instance is a .fast putter, gauging the shot on his way to the ball and losing no time in either missing It quick' or making it. The point to re- member is that these factors must be determined and then the entire concentration focussed on strok- ing the ball along the lines map- ped out in advance...

Don't let worry over the result, tense your stance or swing. Re- laxation here is important; the stroke must be smooth. Horton Smith has found it helpful to just practice stroking the ball. There is no cup to divert his attention to the task in practice and once on the green, he has little trouble sinking them. On the other hand, Walter Travis used to putt toward a pencil stuck upright on the green, Experiment and find which method allows you the greatest measure of concentration. Then practice perfecting that routine.
