GOOD WIN FOR CHINESE Y.M.C.A. IN "A" DIVISION Difficulties Of The Bridges Street Court

PLAY-OFF FOR SENIOR TITLE PROBABLE

(By "ADREM”)

LEAGUE badminton over the past week has been disor- ganised to a certain extent by the Annual Race Meet- ing but an interesting result was returned on Monday, when Chinese "Y" placed themselves in a strong position for the Senior championship by beating the holders, Hong Kong University, at Bridges Street by the large margin of 6 games to 3.

On the face of this result It would appear that Chinese "" have the championship in their pocket; my guess, however, is that University will beat them in the return match at University and any play-off that is necessary, to be played on a neutral court, will result in a win for the un- dergraduates.

That, however, remains to be seen.

DIFFICULT CONDITIONS

Without wishing in any way to de- tract from the undoubted merit of

·Chinese "Y's" performance, I under- stand that the conditions at the

·Bridges Street court had a most un- settling effect on several of the visit- ing representatives, who had not played there hitherto,

Nevertheless the fent of C. Au and H. Koh, in winning all three games, including one against the current

Colony doubles titlists, was a parti- cularly good one.

Patrick Wong and F. Koh also did well, beating H. F. Chew and C. K. Lee, and M. S. Lim and P. S.

Bun,

and only losing to Hui and Yong by a narrow margin.

a

S. C. Chung and H. M. Lau, couple I do not recollect having seen in action this season, only managed one game but they put up a great | fight against Hul and Yong and only

went down after "setting."

Most disappointing for University were H. F. Chew and C. K. Lee, who, despite several promising displays in carlier matches, went down badly in all three games.

Victoria Recreation Club, fielding a weak team, distinguished themselves against Kowloon Tong. whom they defeated on the latters' court by 5 games to 4.

The home team

to were unable field a full side but took on their op- ponents with only two couples, which were, however, only able to win four games between them.

Credit for the V.R.C. win, which is their first this season, goes to D. M. Xavier and veteran S. A. Rumjahn,

who won both their games.

BT. TERESA'S "FAIL # neighbouring court, Teresa's, without Francis Tsang, put up surprisingly poor resistance against St. John's. considering they were playing on their

own court, and only managed to win three games.

This match served to illustrate my remarks of last week apropos the Kwok brothers and St. Andrew's. Plying together on Wednesday, they were unbeatable and won all three games pretty well as they liked.

Feature of their game was their splendid powers of retrieving. They kept their mistakes to a minimum and relied more on steadiness than brilliance, a policy that will always pay In League encounters be they

badminton or tennis.

perience was most evident.

For the home team Francis Chong, 11.00 brought into the team for the first

time without previous trial, did quite well in partnership with John Chen. At the moment his backhand is far from good and concentrated practice on this wing is obviously necessary. In other respects he smashes well and is very quick at the net.

Most consistent pair were, as usual, Peter Lo and Joe Tsang, who played nood all round bad- minton to win two of the three games a cured by their team. Austin Ho was completely off form and played rather carelessly: his partner, Joe Lum was much steadier,

St. Teresa's have now lost two mat- ches and are consequently not very strongly placed for the championship.
