London, To-day.

THE NAZI INTENSIFICATION of the U-boat war against neutral ships has driven the Norwegian and Danish press to ask how long the neutrals are going to stand it?

The United States, according to American advices, is to ask Berlin exactly what it means in its recent announce- ment of policy as regards the torpedoing of neutral ships and how it is to be applied.

NORWAY'S THREE PROTESTS

It is now clear that the torpedoing of the

Netherlands ship Burgerdijk last week was in accordance with this policy, and to-day the 1,000-ton

Norweglun steamer Bisp is overdue

and presumed lost.

The statement says the sinking of the ship followed the carrying out of the regular prize law procedure.

It declares the term contraband applies where there is a hostile des- tination and alleged that the destina- tion in the ship's papers is not decisive.

Meanwhile, the Norwegian Seamen's Associations are threatening to

call on their members to refuse to sail in ships carrying cargoes to "that belligerent natoin which has as its proud aim the murder of defenceless sailors."

The Associations have presented a joint resolution to the Foreign Minister strongly protesting against the present form of sea warfare and declaring that several recent cases in which Norwegian ships were sunk by German sub. marines are contrary to. Interna- tional law and all feelings of hu- manity,

The resolution asks the Norwegian administration to remember the war against the Norwegian Mercantile Marine when the new trade agree- ments are to be concluded, and to ob- tain guarantees to ensure that sea- men will not be exposed to the pre- sent form of warfare, which is con- trary to international law. SUICIDE

This attitude is endorsed by the Danilsh newspaper "National-Eidende," which says that for Germany to lay down the conditions for maritime trude by this declaration means that it is suicide, for the conditions are impossible to fulfil

While in Italy, the "Corriere della Sera" rejects Germany's claim that she has become Mistress of the Seas. The paper comments: "In spite of German sneers, Britain controls the seas."

Interesting Situation

London, To-day.

The Russians in the Summa sector are confronted, says Router's milltary correspondant, with a phase of battle where the situation may still be en. tirely in the favour of the defenders.

A delaying action will be fought while the Russian batteries are brought forward. These batteries must be linked to their munition points, while petrol and food supplies will be difficult to establish.
