The four friends, Dorothy (Judy Garland), the Scarecrow (Ray Bolger), the Tin Woodman (Jack Haley) and the Cowardly Lion (Bert Lahr) vainly try to figure an escape In this scene from "The Wizard of Or."
This film, described as the best since "Snow White," is coming to the Queen's Theatre shortly.
uniform that I have ever seen.
Russian soldiers, wherever we have seen them as prisoners, all looked in fact too miserable to care what hap- pened to them. They are the saddest and most deplorable looking men in | den.)
we came up here there were sixty men, but only about thirty had ever used a gun before, I had never fired | a gun in my life and I never fired my rifle once after we got to the front. When we were ordered to fight I would find a stone or a tree and lic down behind it, but I never fred a shot."
NO BELIEF IN WAR
This Sudeten conscript declared that the Rusalan soldiers had no in- terest In the speeches of their politi- cal commissars. They merely Ilsten- ed and then went on, but they said nothing at all and most of them did not believe what they were told. In his opinion, the real Russian prole- tariat had nothing to do with the war. They were simply driven into it.
We asked if other foreigners had been forced into the Red army and he replied: "Yes, there are many foreigners like myself but not Spanish Communists. They keep them hidden away and nobody sees them any more." The Sudeten said he had heard shooting behind the Russians' own lines, but had personally never seen anyone shot by the Ogpu's army of control.
Finally, we talked to two Russian officers in an adjoining room, They and also wore the were both young quilted cotton uniform which virtual- ly all Russian prisoners are wearing when captured. One was a lieuten- in the Red army ant who has been
looked as if he since 1932, but he was scarcely qualified for more than a corporal in any European army. He responded to our questions automati- cally without looking any of us in the
eyes.
SHEER MISERY
The Russian lieutenant admitted that he had been a member of the Communist Party, and then added with unexpected frankness: But since I am a prisoner I am no longer a party member:" He said they had been told that the Finns had started the war.. "So we went to fight as a matter of discipline. We had orders and we had to carry them out."
BUDETEN GERMAN. The most interesting, man amongst these prisoners was not a Russian but a Sudeten German aged twenty-eight, who had gone to Russia in 1931, be- The two officers talked much less cause he could got no work in Bude- ! freely than the common soldiers.
