"EXPRESS" AND "MAIL' OBJECT TO FOOD RATIONING
London, To-day.
THE RATIONING OF FOOD was the subject of comment in the British press yesterday, following the announce. ment that sugar would be rationed from January 8, together with bacon and butter.
While most of the papers accept the rationing as a neces- sary measure to conserve the war effort, the "Daily Mail" and the "Daily Express" take the other line, and my that it is not necessary.
The thajority of the papers em- phase the Minister of Food's state- ment that fationing means a fair distribution.
"The Times” says that the ration- ing Will give more room in British ships for other imports necessary to the war effort. There are other foods which can be obtained more easily; jam is outside the sugar ration.
Concerning meat rationing, "The Times" welcomes the assurances that the scheme for controlling meat and livestock will be operated by traders, not bureaucrats.
NATIONAL EFFORT
The "Daily Telegraph" describes the schorne as part of the contribution the home consumer makes to the national effort. Everyone will get an equal share.
The "Manchester Guardian" says that it is a proper decision to make. Rationing has to come if the war is to last any time, and one might as well act officially and openly instead of by back-stairs_methods.
The "News Chronicle" says that the rationing will not seriously alter the standard of living. Rationing will prevent that scramble for supplies in which the poorest go to the wall.
