DISASTROUS FIRE

A disastrous fire occurred in the west part of the city early yesterday 17 | morning. Several hundreds of huts were burnt to the ground. Some 3,000 people are said to have been rendered homeless. · Our Own Correspondent.

A striking example of the acceleration of armaments in Britain was given yesterday by Mr. Leslie Burgin, Minis- ter of Supply.

Since the war began, he said, the output of shells has been doubled and is now ten times as great as in the same period during the last war.

Gun production is eight times great- er in some cases and next year will exceed the peak reached at the end of the Great War.

Twenty new ordnance factories have been built, and 300 others have been extended. Sixty per cent of the total cost of the or. dnance factories goes in wages.

It was impossible to exaggerate the importance of the close relations existing between Britain and France | in matters of supply, he said.

The French Minister of Munitions will visit London next month,--Reu- ter.
