bers and German fighters in the Heligoland STOP PRESS TEL. 20022 or 33993 Bight area is described by observers as the big- gest battle of the war so far and comparable to the major air battles of the Great War.
It is stated that nearly 100 planes took part in the battle, which raged for two hours over a wide area. About 40 of the planes were British bom- bers.
The Germans are putting out fantastic claims but the Air Ministry confirms its earlier report that seven R.A.F. planes were lost and 12 Messerch- midts downed.
The British bombers which took part in the raid are described as an ultra modern type, and engaged in flerce duels against repeated attacks by the Nazi fighters.
The wreckage of many planes and the bodies of dead aviators have been washed ashore on the German coast, while two of the crew of a British bomber have been picked up by a German boat. BOMBS DROPPED
It is emphasised here that the Bri- tish bombers' mission was completely successful.
Not only were many photographs taken but bombs were dropped at Wilhelmshaven, though the result is not known.-Reuter.

It is authoritatively stated that the importance the German High Command attaches to "the pre- servation of their diminishing fleet is emphasised by the strenuous resistance to the re- connaissance by the R.A.F. yes- terday with the object of seeking out and destroying enemy war- ships at sea.

The enemy withdrew naval forces and left their fighter British aircraft to dispute the passage.
In the course of severe fighting .the skill and determination of the British captains and crews and the effectiveness of the armament of the British aircraft were clearly demonstrated by the heavy casual- ties suffered by the enemy.
The German account of the en- gagement is regarded as an abor- tive attempt to minimise the se- have of prestige they vere loss suffered on sea and in the air in the last few days.

Kwong Chow Wan, To-day. Some 2,000 Japanese troops moved out from Nanning yester- day morning and have proceeded westwards with, apparently, the object of attacking Lungchow, near the French Indo-China border. They were also reported to be moving heavy artillery pieces.from. Nanning. No reports of any major fighting west of Nanning have yet reached this city, but it is believed that the Chinese will make a stand at Yungkang, which the Japanese will have to take before attempt- ing to strike south-westwards to Lungchow.-Our Own Correspon-
