'UNCONDITIONAL

DEFEAT' THREAT

LEAGUE TO DISCUSS CASE

AT GENEVA THIS WEEK

London, To-day. THE LEAGUE COUNCIL and Assembly will meet on Saturday and Monday to discuss Finland's appeal.

The British Government, it is officially announced, has accepted the invitation to attend the meet- ings. Meanwhile, Finland has told the League of Nations that she intends to fortify the strategically im- portant Aaland Islands, an indication that she is to continue her resistance to the Russian inva- sion.

Finland claimed yesterday that 1,500 Russian troops have been captured north of Lake Ladoga.

The Finnish peace appeal, made through the Swedish Minister in Moa- cow, has been rejected In the form of a communique, which says:

RED COMMUNIQUE

"M. Molotov explained to the Swe- dish Minister that the Soviet does not recognise the Government at Helsinki, which has left the capital for an un- known destination.

"The Soviet only recognises the new people's government."

It is not yet known whether the U.S.S.R. will be present at the League Council's session which starts Saturday upon Finland's request.

Much interest is also shown with regard to Italy's attitude; her resigna- tion legally expires on December 11, and therefore theoretically the Italian delegate is entitled to attend the first meetings.

Latvia is a member of the Council and retains nominal sovereignty and although, practically foreign policy, speaking, she is under Soviet domina- tion. Havas.
