David Bruce Burnstone, Merwin D. Maier, Oswald Jacoby, Howard Schen- ken. World's leading Team-of-Four, Inventors of the system that has beaten every other system in existence.

ALERT DEFENSE

While South's play of this three- notrump contract should not be cri- ticized too severely, he gave Samuel Fry, Jr., the opportunity to make fine defensive play and set the con- tract.

Of course South was made to look foolish; but if diamonds had been divided differently

had or Mr. Fry failed to unblock, Declarer's line of play would have been the winning

one.

Mr. Fry opened the ten of hearts. East played the King and South won the first trick with the Ace. Declarer

long and earnestly. He might lead a club to dummy's King (the only sure re-entry), then lead a diamond from dummy and finesse the nine. But on this line of play dummy might become entirely worthless if either opponent held three diamonds. South therefore decided to reserve the club King in dummy as a re-entry and laid down the diamond Ace from his own hand, hoping (1) that he drop a singleton honour in. East's hand, or (2) that the suit would" be divided with West holding the King..

ANSWER:-Your correct bid is to pass. Although partner evidently has some strength, his hand is probably balanced, and it would be best to try to beat the opponent's one-spade con-- tract. A double will be taken out.
