OF DICKENS
MR. SQUEERS THE ENEMY OF EUROPE
THE ORDER SEEMS TO have gone forth recently from Nazi propaganda headquarters to shift the barrage of abuse against British statesmen on to the British character in genéral.
The "Deutsche Allgemeine Zeitung" prints an arti- cle in which examples are cited from the novels of Dickens to show that the Germans are faced with a "poisonous, grasping, brutal enemy,” full of "cynical contempt for humanity."
The thought of the British blockade seems to have brought to mind a num- ber of famous characters.
Mr. Squeers of Dotheboys Hall is "the classic symbol of that English hypocrisy, which has hounded the Polish nation to destruction to anni- hilate Hitlerism."
Daniel Quilp is the type of the or- ganisers of the blockade and is com- pared with Mr. Churchill.

A speech by Gauleiter Burckel, Hitler's Viceroy in what was once Austria, suggests that there have been uneasy times in that part of the en larged Reich.
In a speech which seems to be ad- dressed to all opponents of the Nazi regime, past and present, Burckel said that those who had served at the front would no longer be reproached with their "political unreliability." The speech continues:-
Here and there it is alleged against me that I am too much inclined to try to win over the Marxist workers. 1 declare here and now that I am not only inclined to do so but that I am proud to win those Marxists and then to march out with them shoulder to she der, if they take up arms for our people and the National Socialist
looks as though "true socialism" is to be the slogan for meeting any pos- sible percolation of Soviet ideas through the frontiers of Central Europe.
Even the collection of fruit leaves to provide a substitute for tea is being organised with the usual Nazi love of bureaucratic procedure.
A news paragraph runs as follows:
