The Rear-Admiral, financ- Jed by £70,000 of Government money, is almost ready to start and will certainly leave early in October, while Bri- tain, which should be very interested in Antarctica, still mulls over the subject. Byrä has never yet been known to go anywhere without getting what he wanted, and some time in 1940 America will un- doubtedly have staked for- midable, and perhaps un- challengeable, claims to all available territory that it

There is, as you possibly know, quite. a scramble for Antarctica, the eternal- ly frozen vast wasteland which may of may not have several rich plums in the way of coal, maganese, and other minerals under its coating of ice. Seven nations in all lay claim to the frozen empire-Britain, Russia, Germany, Sweden, France, Norway, and the United States.

But the scrambling up to now has been disorganised. Last April Germany claimed 230,000 square miles of ter-

Claims made by certain nations to slices of Antarctica conflict with the claims of others. The result is confusion and contention.

The British Empire claims three large sectors, the Falkland Islands Dependencies, Ross Dependency, and an extensive area apportion- ed to Australja..

But the French, for example, claim part of Australia's “prize," while Germany 'butts in on Queen Maud Land, a stretch of coast which Norway regards as hers.
