On board the Changte it is thought that suicide is extreme- ly improbable. It is thought that he fell overboard at an un- guarded portion of the ship's deck, during momentary nausea. This opinion is confirmed by the ship's doctor, who told the "China Mail" that he had been treating Mr. Hedges for gastric trouble dur- ing the preceding two or three days.

WELL-KNOWN HERE Mr. Hedges, who is well-known in Hong Kong, especially as a keen fisherman, was Chief Engineer of the Changte for a number of years. Happily married, with a family in Sydney, Australia, he was noted for his general high spirits and freedom from worry.

Some two or three days prior to his disappearance he began to suffer from some gastric trouble, and was being treated for it by the ship's doctor. The night before his disappearance, he had had & slight recurrence of the trouble, but seemed to have recovered by the time he went to his cabin.

At 7 o'clock the next morning, he was found to have disappeared. The Changte immediately turned round and sailed back over her 'course, but without success.
