STATE OF INSURRECTION National Guards Out In Colorado With Tanks
TRAGIC DEATH OF CHANGTE'S ENGINEER
Mr. C. Hedges, Chief En gineer of the Australian-Oriental Line 8.8. Changte, disappeared from the ship when it was some three days out at sea
from Manila, near Thursday Island, officers of the ship told the “China Mail” this morning.
On board the Changte it is thought that suicide is extreme- ly improbable. It is thought that he fell overboard at an un- guarded portion of the ship's deck, during momentary nausea. This opinion is confirmed by the ship's doctor, who told the "China Mail" that he had been treating Mr. Hedges for gastric trouble dur- ing the preceding two or three days.

WELL-KNOWN HERE Mr. Hedges, who is well-known in Hong Kong, especially as a keen fisherman, was Chief Engineer of the Changte for a number of years. Happily married, with a family in Sydney, Australia, he was noted for his general high spirits and freedom from worry.
Some two or three days prior to his disappearance he began to suffer from some gastric trouble, and was being treated for it by the ship's doctor. The night before his disappearance, he had had & slight recurrence of the trouble, but seemed to have recovered by the time he went to his cabin.
At 7 o'clock the next morning, he was found to have disappeared. The Changte immediately turned round and sailed back over her 'course, but without success.

"BLAZING SHIP"
ABANDONED
Jacksonville, Florida, To-day. The air search for the mysterious "blazing oil tanker" whose distress signals were received to the effect that its crew had had to take to the boats, has been abandoned by the U.S. Coast Guard authorities.
It was pointed out to the “China Mail" that just outside his cabin,

It is thought probable that, during the night, Mr. Hedges had a recurrence of his trouble, went to the ship's side to vomit-the sea was calm at the time and was overcome by nausea and fell overboard,
The ship's doctor told the ““China Mail" that, from his knowledge of Mr. Hedges from a medical point of view, this was quite possible.
The Changte arrived from Manila this morning.
