BRITAIN'S WAR MIGHT TO BE GIVEN FULL TEST Biggest Array Of Warships For Twenty Years

London, To-day.

Britain's defensive strength on sea, land and air will be tested during August with an intensity unparallelled in peace-time.

The first step will be taken to-morrow, when 12,000 Reservists including retired officers and pen- sioners-will join their depots and man the re- serve fleet, preparatory to its inspection by the King at Weymouth.

On August 9, the men will report to Portsmouth, Devonport, Chatham and Gosport, and the manning of the fleet will be carried out on a new plan in record speed.

RIOT SQUAD CALLED OUT

Glasgow, To-day.

An emergency squad of Glas- gow Police was called yesterday morning to the district of Gorbals to protect the residents against a civil disturbance.

Windows were smashed and it is reported that some shop-win- dows were looted.

The police have arrested 13 per. sons, including a woman.--Trans- Ocean.

SOVIET COUNCIL MEETING ENDS

The annual congress of the Supreme Soviet of the Great Russian Republic ended yester day with the confirmation of all laws and decrees enacted since the last Congress.

Among these were measures ap- pointing 16 People's Commissars who took office in the course of the past year.

Chengtu, To-day,

Eight days' continuous rain has caused the upper stretches of the Min River to overflow its banks, flooding a large number of 'districts in west Szechwan.

Mountain freshets, tearing down in mighty torrents, turned thou- sands of acres of farmland into miniature lakes.

The Paoping embankment on the lower reaches of the Min River has collapsed at several points, while the dykes at Siangpitze are in danger.

Conservancy authorities in Szech- wan are doing all they can to pre- vent further disasters.-Central News.

Sir Dudley Pound will thus hold. the highest rank in the Royal Navy. The new Admiral of the Fleet is 52 years old. He was in command of H.M.S. Colossus at Jutland and from October, 1935, to May, 1939,- was Commander-in-Chief of the Mediterranean Fleet.

He succeeded Sir Roger Back- house, who died recently, as First Sea Lord and Chief of the Naval Staff.-Trang-Ocean.
