OF JAP. FRIGHTFULNESS

Seven men lost their lives, another succumbed later, and two others were badly wounded on Friday afternoon when a Japanese trawler, flying the flag of the Imperial Japanese Navy, "amused" itself by setting their junk on fire and then machine-gunning the unfortunate

crew.

Wong Chum and his crew of 9 were fishing near Tai-O, in the Tungping district (Chinese ter- ritory) at about 3 p.m. on Friday when they were approached by a Japanese armed trawler. After taking all their fishing-gear and several tins of kerosene, the Japanese threw them overboard and set the junk on fire.

Wong and the 9 fokis scrambled into a little sampau which they. had been towing and attempted to get away from the burning junk. This was apparently contrary to Japanese notions of bushido, or "cricket," for the trawler prompt- ly opened fire on them from close range with machine-guns.
