STEPHEN WONG AND MA BEAT RUMJAHNS Former Champions' First Setback This Season
I.R.C. Have Little Difficulty Against H.K. University
AS was generally expected, Indian Recreation Club had little difficulty in beating Hong Kong University at Pokfulum yesterday.
Only surprising feature in connection with the performance was the first League defeat of this season of H. D. and S. A. Rumjahn.
Responsible for this feat, which was as remarkable as it was un- expected, were Stephen Wong and Ma Chiu chong. This pair were in irresistible form yesterday and playing a fine brand of aggressive tennis, swept through all opposi- I.R.C. tion to win all threc of their S.C.A.A. H.K.C.C. engagements.
C.R.C. Stephen Wong was probably the Recreio better of the two players, being K.C.C.

departments, very accurate in all but he was given every support by his partner.
I. R. C. led 2-1, and 4-2 at the end of the first and second rounds respectively. The most, in- teresting engagement of the after- noon, in which the Rumjahns met their Waterloo, was the last set to be finished and was keenly watch- ed by the spectators.
Wong and Ma jumped into form right away and quickly established a lead, which, at the eighth game, was 6-3 in their favour. The Rumjahns then rallied to level at 5--all but the undergraduates were

Whilst full credit must be given to Wong and Ma for their splendid 8 performance, it must be appreciat- ed that conditions for those not used to the Pokfulum ground, are distinctly difficult.
DIFFICULT LIGHT Apart from the extremely bumpy
· the afternoon sunshine which played across the ground at an increasingly acute angle, made it most difficult for the visiters and there is little doubt that this factor as much as anything was responsible for the Rumjahns' defeat.

Wong and Ma also did well win their set against Omar Rum- jahn and Razack. They led 54, were overhauled and went out after a stern tussle, at 7-5.
The other two University pairs were very mediocre and were easily beaten by all the I.R.C. combination. S. Wong and C. C. Ma (H.K.U.). beat O. Rumjahn and I. M. A.
