25 THOUSAND FEET UP. ALL IN THE DAY'S WORK A METEOROLOGICAL FLIGHT.--Daily fights into the sub-stratos- phere from Mildenhall, Suffolk, enable the Air Ministry to forecast weather conditions far over the Atlantic for trans-ocean pilots. The work is done by the Meteorological Flight of the R.A.F. who every day fly to 25,000ft.,' in winter often encountering temperatures of 80 degrees below freezing. They have an unbroken rui of 1500 flights since the last cancellation of a scheduled flight in Nov. 1936. The flights were established in 1924 and the present work is done by two pilots flying Gloster Gauntlet fighters whose armament is replaced by sensitive weather-recording instruments. Weather reports obtained are collated with information from other sources to aid Atlantic pl- lots. Photo shows one of the pilots, wearing oxygen mask, being a8- slated into plane before a Meterological flight. Passed by the Air Ministry
