SWISS DEFENCE PLANS: WORK INTENSIFIED
ON THE BORDER FORTS

Heavy artillery, machine-guns and
ample stooks of munitions have been concentrated in these sectors. Though no regular troops have been mobilised, the border guard, in normal times about 2,500, has been more than doubled.
Mines are still in position beneath all the bridges and roads leading into the country. They were placed there last September.
Day and night these roads and bridges are under close surveillance, and the mines are ready to be touch- ed off, for the Swiss are

Everything possible is being done by Parliament to prepare the coun-
try for defence. The Swiss Army numbers about 400,000. It has been completely reorganised and a special force known as the Armee de Cou- verture created. It is composed of men inhabiting the frontier regions and its members are required to be ready for immediate service.
The purpose of the Armee de Couverture is to hold at bay or to delay an invader until the regular army has had time to mobilise. This requires about 24 hours.

Did he ever show a positive interest in Christian tenets? Did he tolerate the pre- sence of Christians at his court or of conversions in the Imperial House- hold?
Of a different sort of interest is an article by Li Hsiu-shih, who had the doubtful honour of being the first Chinese aviator to bomb the Japanese. Although occasionally naive, he tells an extraordinarily interesting tale.

In addition to a variety of article and book reviews is a pointed "word- battle" between Chen Kuo-feng and Emily Hahn, the bone of conten- tion being the latter's review of Malraux's "Man's Hope." Although Miss Hahn's assertions at times are rather breath-taking, she seems to win the major battle on points. But possibly.
