RACING

Disconcerting Vagaries Of

Form On Heavily-Backed Janber

MR. PROULX'S FINE WIN ON VIXEN TOR

(By "RAPIER")

Conditions for racing last Saturday, the first day of the Fifth Extra Meeting, were far from sat- isfactory.

Nevertheless, despite the weather, the attend- ance was most encouraging, and the meeting pass- ed off without any serious incident.

Mr. Sadick was thrown by Eve of Harvest and Conquering Time Geordie shortly after the com-

shared the honours in betting.

Coming into the straight, Jennifer was overhauled, and it was then £ de-question of whether Conquering Time

could beat Eve of Harvest.

Honours among jockeys went servedly to Mr. H. J. A. Hearne, who signalised his return to riding with two wins, the second of which paid the best dividend of the day.

The Bondi Handicap resulted in an easy win for Courting Eve, although it was carrying 165 lbs. The sodden state of the track appeared to suite this pony's movement!

Double Finesse (Mr. Yuen) tried to run away, and it was leading up to a certain stage, but after it was passed by Courting Eve the best it could do of off the challenge was to stave Triumphant Day (Mr. Tao).

It is difficult to account for the dis- appointing performance of Snowy River (Mr. Raymond), especially after the way it ran at the previous meeting. Great-Hearted Pony The second race; the Lead Mine Handicap (First Section), over six furlongs, left little doubt that in Eye of Harvest the Sassoon Stable has a great-hearted pony. Carrying 163 lbs., it proved itself to be equally at home on a wet or dry track.

The latter provided a little stronger finish and won with half a length to spare, Moonlight View tried hard for third, but the place went to Jennifer.

The Whitsun Handicap, over a mile, which was regarded as the outstanding event of the day, turned out to be a tame affair,

Only three ponies faced the starter, Celtic Star (Mr. Tao), King Kong (Mr. Raymond) and Marksman (Mr. Needa).

"After You !”

Both Mr. Tao and Mr. Needa were evidently hoping for King Kong to take the lead, but Mr. Raymond did not ac- cept the honour, with the result that the race started at a snail's pace, much to the amusement of spectators.

Marksman was slightly in the lead, with Celtic Star nearly alongside of it, and so slow was the pace that it was most disappointing.

The speed improved perceptibly be- fore the Rock was reached and when

sures are to be applied to slow up the momentum of the arms and hands or the turn of the body. The follow through of the expert golfer who visibly applies power is little different, however. In exceptional cases he may hit hard as to throw himself off balance at the finish. However, this does not happen with any degree of regularity and the per- centage of such instances is small the enough to be overlooked in comparison.

The mediocre golfer enjoys no such enviable record.. Oftentimes he does not even look or consider as far ahead as the follow through His mind in making his stroke, is intent on hitting the ball and the quicker he can do this the bet ter, in his estimation, let his posi- tion be what it may at the end. A good golf analyst can tell how good a stroke is by the finish, in. other words: "by their follow through ye shall know them."

Disappoints

MR. B. A. PROULX

In the Lead Mine Handicap (second section) over six furlongs, Avón (Mr. Wei) and Lancashire Lass (Mr. Tao) commanded the betting, followed by Potentate (Mr. Encarnacao).

Oak Bay (Mr. Davis), was expect- ed, tried to run away, but found the going against these tactics.

A Bad Start

Lancashire Lass did not have the best of starts, but even then I don't think it could have beaten Avon, which was still running quite strongly at the finish.

At the previous meeting Potentate came first in a race over the two mile post distance, and yet, last Saturday, it was a dismal failure,

Such are the disconcerting vagaries of form which punters have to contend with!

The biggest field of the day faced the starter in the Stonecutters Plate, a half-mile scurry, in which mounts were given to novice jockeys. The start was terrible! The ponies had hardly got into line when the barrier shot up and Green Bay (Mr. Treverton) shot for- ward to take a commanding lead.

The race appeared just as good as over, but Mr. Yeung Wing-kwai was the ponies came into the straight King not dismayed and kept plodding along on National Honour. Initial energy ex- Kong shot forward and the race was won. Celtic Star made a gallant attended evidently took a lot out of the and it simply tempt to beat Marksman, but the latter latter pony, however,

could not overhaul Green Bay.

was a little too good.

The fourth race, the Shatin Handicap (first section), over six furlongs, was really the best race of the day as far as the finish was concerned,

Sylvandale (Mr. Needa) and Royal Highness (Mr. Encarnacao) command- ed the most support in the betting fol- lowed by Dekko (Mr. Wei).

Dekko did not get a good start, but ran strongly, and when the ponies came within reach of the stands it. shot for- ward, hotly pursued by both Sylvan- dale and Royal Highness.

It appeared certain that Dekko would be beaten but it passed the winning post just a fraction ahead of Sylvan- dale, with Royal Highness third.

Protest Upheld

After the race was over, a protest was lodged, and it was later announced ing, with the result that Sylvan- that Dekko was disqualified for cross dale was officially named the winner.

The fifth race, the Spencer Handicap, over one mile, which was also the first leg of the "Daily Double," resulted in a surprise win for Vixen Tor (Mr. Proulx). Carrying 165 Ibs. and, in view of the fact that the mile was considered a little too far for this pony," its win was really very creditable.

Tornado Star (Mr. Wei) was the most strongly supported, but it could not do better than place second.

Rivulet (Mr. Pih) appeared to me in the Paddock.to be very fit, but a bad start was the cause of its eclipse. Happy Landings (Mr. Davis) made the running fairly fast, but was un- able to keep it up. Coming into the home stretch, Vixen Tor took com- mand, and, despite a strong challenge from Tornado Star, it won fairly com- fortably.

Rising Star (Mr. Pan) was third, several lengths behind.

In this race, Mr. Sadick, was thrown, and it seems clear that Geordie is not a easy pony to handle.

The many punters, who backed Jan- ber (Mr. Raymond) in the Warwick Farm Handicap for Australian ponies of this season were sorely disappointed. This pony carried 2095 tickets to win, and this amounted to $10,475.00 in hard cash!

"Shocking Surprise"

Mr. Raymond got his mount off to a good start, and so strongly was the pony running, that it appeared merely a question of how many lengths it would win by. A shocking surprise was in store! Step by step, Ruby Star (Mr. Tao) and Baffin Bay (Mr. Proulx) took the lead within 100 yards of the caught up, and the former actually only finish to win by a short margin, much to the chagrin of Janber's host of a supporters.

The last race of the day, the Shatin Handicap (second section) provided the best win dividend of the day $127-with Mr. H. J. A. Hearne riding a clever Guinness Time to beat Radium Star.

race on

Radium Star (Mr. Pan) jumped into the lead on the rise of the barrier, and at one time was leading by at least four lengths.

Then up from behind came Guinness Time, and after it got into line with Radium Star these two indulged in a great

battle, with whips flaying. Guinness Time made no mistake, how- ever, and passed the winning post half a length in front of Radium Star.

Tribute, carrying 165 lbs., did well to secure third place and paid a useful dividend.
