YORKSHIRE A LEG UP IN BATTLE OF ROSES
Outplay Lancashire In All Departments
Hollies Bowls Well Against Derby
Yorkshire more than delighted their support- ers in the first of the season's battles of the Roses, when they beat their Lancashire rivals at Old Traf- ford by an innings and 43 runs.
Lancs, despite a first-innings score of 300, were never in the picture, Yorkshire outplaying them in all departments.
Thanks to the fine batting of veteran Sutcliffe, and Mitchell, Yorks were able to declare their only innings closed when they had totalled the huge score of 528 for 8.
Bowes, of Yorkshire, bowled de- vastatingly in Lancashire's second innings and took 6 for 43 to skittle them out for a meagre 185.
Hardstaff made a hurricane cen- tury in Notts second inings against Surrey to enable his county knock off the runs required for

spare, while the bowling of Hollies was chiefly responsible for War-
