THE DAILY SHORT STORY
INDIAN SIGN
When they were children they called it the "Indian Sign." It was a feeling of inferiority and inadequacy that one person exercised upon another. If a man had the India Sign on you you couldn't hope to cope with him.
Curiously, when Hilma Saw Jake Hayford coming toward her across the crowded floor she remembered her own childhood experience with the Indian Sign. When she was twelve and Jake fourteen and they both lived in Ash- mont, Jake had the India Sign on her. She felt inferior and inadequate when- ever he was around. It made ber furious, even then, but she hadn't been able to shake off the feeling.
"Hilma, here's a curious looking guy who says he used to live in the same town with you. I've flatly told him that that shopworn type of artifice wouldn't get him an introduction, but he insists."
