NOW that the Softball season is almost over we turn to Baseball, the game of all games in the Old U.S.A.

LEWIS FOR ENGLAND

London, To-day. It is announ- ced that John Henry Lewis is sailing from New York on Thurs- day to defend his world light- heavyweight boxing championship against the British Champion, Len Harvey, in London, some- time in May.-Reuter.

With Major Duclos at the head of the Baseball Re-Arranged

League this year and with the able assistance of the rest of the officials, baseball in Hong Kong will be boosted to a higher pinnacle.

RUNS HIMSELF

The Diamond Artists are rarin' to go. To don their spikes and start cahorting around the base- ball by-paths to start the new season with a bang!

May 6th is the opening date. Judging from the entries, this coming season promises to be the best since baseball was first in- troduced in the Colony. Most of the teams have recruited good new players and the standard of play this year should be much better than in previous seasons.

The U. S. S. Mindanao team, accord- ing to Charlie Horton, captain and coach will be much stronger with the services of some young players just out from the States.

Notable among these players are twirler Ruel and outfielder Wrigley. According to Horton he has a very good defensive aggregation but they are a little weak with the hickory.

Hong Kong Baseball Club will have some new faces in their camp and the

Seeing how Mike "Fats" Mendonca ran bases in softball I am afraid the other managers will insist that he runs his own bases and not be allow- ed a team-mate to run for him of_yore.

Better Start slimming, Mike! The Chinese Baseball Club will be without the help of their able mentor Abe Liu. Thoy will have to carry on by themselves with the same players they had last year plus two or three new ones, and if they let the coach- ing of Abo Liu sink into their heads they should repeat their performance last year to retain the Bagram Shield and the Brown Cup.

Earl Wong should be much better on the pitching slab as he has grown bigger and stronger.

TENNIS

Fine Match For To-Day

With this morning's improve-

ment in the weather, a huge crowd can be expected at the Hong Kong Cricket Club this afternoon for a match which should produce some of the most thrilling tennis in the tournament to date.

On the Stand Court, S. A. Rum- jahn, hero of so many encounters, will meet Lim Thian-tet, former Perak champion, playing in his first tournament in the Colony.

Rumjahn is always a good draw- ing card, while Lim's victory over Teddy Fincher has placed him in the front rank of local players.

The result should be very open.

U. B. Beer is a new entry compos- way it looks on paper, with the addi-ed of local boys who have played be- fore for other teams. It's hard to predict how they will pan out as these boys have never played together be- South China, second division cham- fore, but knowing the players as in-pions will meet a rest team from dividual performers, the U. B. clan will be a team to be contended with. the Junior divisions. There are some very fast and flashy players in the team, namely, Oldtimer Terry Leonard, Dave Leonard, Ka Nazarin and Kitchell who should give a good account of themselves and put their team in the running.

tion of "Flash" Harris, Larry Brown, Phil "Clipper" Delany, Dick Venezin, R. G. Biesel and "Red" Bell, the Baseballers should get somewhere in stead of finishing at the botton the League as they did last year.-

Ernie "Speed Ball" Hearther who was once a cub pitcher for the San Francisco Seals will do mound duty for the Hong Kong Baseball Club and if his arm is right he will buzz-it- past-them and will have the batters breaking their backs fanning the pill! Recreio who were runners-up last year will have the same outfit that they had last season, but with more experience. You can always bank on the Recs. to be there doing their best to win a ball game. They are fast and play headsup ball all the time.

There are no individual star players in the Recs, hard bal team, but the whole team works as

Johnny the one. Alvares will be the regular hurler with "Spotty" Pereira to relieve him in case. he is yanked out of the box or if the enemy gang up on him.
