Principal Event For To-day

ROSE ELECT CERTAINTY FOR EASTER STAKES

(By “RAPIER”)

The principal race in to-day's programme will be the Easter Stakes, but in actual fact it will be entirely devoid of real interest, simply because of the presence of Rosa Elect, the Derby winner and champion pony.

Before proceeding to discuss pros- pects in connection with this highly important event, it may be of inter- est to take a look back on the results for the last three years, which are as follows:-

1936-Won by Liberty Bay (Mr.

Black).

1937-Won by Bear Claw (Mr.

Black).

1938-Won by Desert Chief (Mr.

Encarnacao).

The following will probably face the starter to-day:

Bear Claw (Mr. P. Y. T. Wel). Eve of Harvest (Mr. H. J. A.

Hearne).

King's Warden (Mr. V. V. Needa). Moonlight View (Mr. H. C. Pih). Rose Elect (Mr. C. Encarnacao). It would appear futile to expect Rose Elect to be seriously challenged, although it will probably be carrying top weight of 168 lbs. In the Hong Kong Handicap over 11⁄4 milen it won as it liked, carrying the same weight. and on that account alone it is only natural to expect Rose Elect to give the Eu Tong Sen stable their second successive win in this event.

on

Bear Claw does not seem to be in the same condition as heretofore, and even if it is absolutely fit it will not Rose make

impression any

The second position will be Elect. fought out between Bear Claw and King's Warden, with the latter hav- ing my backing as the better pony. THE CALLIOPE HANDICAP: FROM THE 1% MILE POST (ABOUT HALF MILE AND 170 YARDS). This race is confined to "B" Class and I think the Australian ponies, winner will come from one of the fol- lowing:-Vixen Tor (Mr. Proulx). Cockleroi ог King's Privilege (Mr. Needa), Derby Day (Mr. Pih) probably Criffel (Mr. Ralph), Blandford (Mr. Poy) and Devonian (Mr. Hearne) as outsiders,

and

with

Vixen Tor won the Coral Plate over six furlongs at the Annual Meeting, and on that account it has been pen- alised 12 lbs. Mr. Proulx is noted

for his ability to get off the mark quickly, and as Vixen Tor is a speedy animal it will be a strong contender at the finish. Derby Day is undoubt-1.12.0-February Fourth (Encarnacao, edly the best choice here, and if it gets off to a good start it will prob- ably win, otherwise I fancy Cockloro or King's Privilege. I am afraid that Blandford is too slow a starter, and I don't think Devonian can do better than secure third place. CABRAMATTA HANDICAP: FROM THE TWO MILE POST ONCE ROUND AND IN. This race is confined to "C"" Class Australian ponies, and an interesting struggle should be seen. Judging from its run in the Moonie Ponds Handicap over the mile at the last meeting, when it came in third

A Great King's Privilege, I think Time (Mr. T, Y. Woo) is due for a win, although penalised by another.. 12 lbs. Strathcarrick (Mr. Black) the came in third to Vixen Tor in Coral Plate, and I think it will give a Great Time a good run. Macquarie River is very lightly treated, and I expect to see it do battle for third place with Twilight Star.
