TETANUS TRACE CHILDREN'S PUZZLE
DRESSING
At a St. Pancras inquest, Pro- fessor Arnold Ashley Miles, Pro- fessor of Bacteriology at Univer- "sity College Hospital, said he found traces of tetanus (lockjaw) in dressings..
A verdict of "Death by mis- adventure" was recorded on Mrs. Florence Wilson (36), of Hack- ney, who died in Hackney Hos- pital following the birth of her! fourth child.
Sir Bernard Spilsbury said that death was definitely due to tetanus, there being a strong pre- sumption that it was caused by dressings applied after the birth. Hard To Quell
Professor Miles, who examined the dressings supplied to the hos- pital, said that in two out of six cases he found traces of tetanus in sterilised dressings.
In one case out of two in un- sterilised dressings-as they had] been supplied by the manufac-
turer-he also found evidence of
tetanus, which was one of the hardest things to quell by steril- isation.
Dr. Arthur Roche, L.C.C. pathologist, said that he found swabs no traces of tetanus on and instruments used on the woman during her life. Examina- tion of the nurse associated with the case also gave a negative re- sult.
