LORD HAILSHAM OBJECTS TO BILLETING PLAN:

REFUSES USE OF HOUSE

The need for the Government to produce "a properly-thought-out scheme" for the billeting of child refugees in war-time is mentioned by Viscount Hailshamn, the former Lord Chancellor, in a letter which he has sent to the Hailsham Rural District Council.

After a canvasser had called on him to ask if his country house at Hurstmonceux, Sussex, might be scheduled for billeting, Lord Hails ham wrote to the council asking the following questions:

What approximate period was estimated as being the length of stay of the children?

Was it proposed that the chil- dren should bring their own bed- ding, mattresses, &c.?

-Were they to be provided with beds, or expected to sleep on the floor?

Were they to be accompanied by any person accustomed to maintain- ing discipline?

Did the Government propose to undertake any liability for dilapida. tions to a house and its contents? "READY TO CO-OPERATE IF-" In a second letter to the council, Lord Hailsham wrote:

Rosalind Russell and Robert Donat in "The Citadel," based on the famous novel of the name, which is coming to the Queen's Theatre in the near future.

"My point is that, if the Ministry asks householders to promise to take children; it should be prepared with the answers to the questions that will be asked.

"I have not yet received the as- surances I want."

MINISTRY'S STATEMENT An official of the Ministry of Health said that complete arrange- ments were being worked out by the appropriate department of the Ministry to assist householders in rural areas in the care of the chil- dren.

---ITALY TO DUCE

A secret inquiry ordered by Mus- solini to discover the actual war sentiments of his, people has re- sulted in a shock.

・ His lieutenants were directed to send letters and questionnaires to every Fascist `organisation in Italy.

The Duce was confident that the replies would show that all Fascists were ready to march with” him “ to the death.

Instead, the summary of `the re- plies which the Duce received was this:----

"Italtan people want peace. They are tired of milltary adventures. They believe that after the end of the Spanish war Italians should be allowed to stay at home and cul- tivate their land.”
