Chungking, To-day. Wanton attacks were again staged by Japanese

warplanes on open towns in Kiangsi and Hu- peh yesterday, resulting in heavy losses of civilian lives and property.

One of the raiders was shot down by Chinese anti- aircraft shells at Fancheng, on the north bank of the Han River.

Kian, on the Kung River, Kiangsi, suffered terri- bly from an attack, which was conducted by 18 Japanese bombers.

More than 300 civilians, mostly women and chil- dren, were killed and maimed. Blocks of houses were gutted by fires caused by incen- diary bombs. The conflagration raged for several hours before it was finally brought under control.

The Provincial Hospital and the Nurses' School were among the buildings destroyed.

The Yang Min Middle School and the Confucius Temple were totally demolished.
