IKIDNAPPERS WOUNDED IN
DRAMATIC BID TO ESCAPE FROM ALCATRAZ IN FOG
San Francisco, To-day. Profitting from one of the worst fogs in San Fran-
cisco Bay for many years, five convicts from Alcatraz Prison yesterday attempted to escape and swim to the mainland.
The alarm was raised immediately and the guards
opened fire.
Arthur Barker, who was serving a life sentence for kidnapping, was critically wounded in the head and another kidnapper Dale Stamphill, was wounded in the legs.
The other three men were cap- tured, although two had already started to swim to the mainland.
Barker was, a member of the notorious Barker-Karpis gang, and was sentenced, in connection with the kidnapping of Edward Bremer, wealthy St. Paul banker, in 1934.
Al Capone was an inmate of Alcatraz until January 7 when he was transferred to the Federal Institution at San Pedro.-Reuter.
