In another case, Lai Fung Shi,.. a female, pleaded not guilty to keeping a brothel at No. 18 Swatow Lane and was remanded for 24 hours.

McEwen said

that when the Police visited the house there were five girls and six men on the premises. Defendant did not admit renting the flat but from enquiries, it was found that receipts for the rent were made out in her name. She had been identifi- ed by the rent collector as the per- son who generally paid the rent.

It was stated concerning two girls, Chan Shiu-hing and Lai Hing found at No. 84, Jaffre Road during a police raid, that the rent of the place was shared equally between- them and that the premises were for their own use. The Police were aware of the existence of one- girl "businesses" but could not take action, though they were visited periodically.

The girls were let off with a caution.

FATAL ACCIDENT THIS MORNING

A fatal accident occurred near the Central Theatre this morning about 8 o'clock when a 60-year-old woman, Kwan Fook, was struck by car No. 4450 driven by Wong Ying-ip, a learner driver.

The woman ran across the road in front of a bus. Trying to avoid her, the learner-driver applied his brakes and swerved. His car struck a pillar and was badly damaged.

The woman, who was caught by the side of the car, died shortly after admission to the Queen Mary Hospital.

Mr. Flegg, of the Tytam Pum- ping station, has reported the theft of 14 hardwood rails from the sta- tion on Saturday, valued at $50.
