JAPANESE WARSHIPS CLEAR FOR ACTION

A sensational report received

here states that all Japanese war- ships operating between Hong Kong and Hainan Island and those around Hainan Island and the Paracels, "cleared decks" for action yesterday.

Tension prevails along the coast and on Hainan Island as the result! of rumours that the long-heralded Japanese South China invasion will be embarked upon as soon as wdr breaks out in Europe.

Czechoslovakian Reply Reported Made Known To Lord Halifax

Persistent reports early this morning, believed to emanate from well- informed quarters, declare that M. Jan Masaryk, the Czech Minister in London, has informed Lord Halifax that the Czecho - Slovakian Government is unable to accept the terms of the German memoran- dum. Our Own Correspondent.
