Three of Seven Colts Left In Derby ST. MAGNUS FOR AUSTRALIA
(By WATCHMAN)
London, August 27. Cockpit's removal from the Derby early in July was not the only misfortune for that brilliant colt. At the same time he was also struck out of the Two Thou- sand Guineas, his only remain- ing classic engagement being the St. Leger.
If all goes well with him he may have to be reckoned with in that race, as his latest performance suggests that he is endowed with good stamina. Curiously enough, Lord Derby's best two-year-old two seasons back, Fair Copy, was not eligible to run for the Derby, the colt having been accidentally left out of the nomina- tions of the Stanley House stable for that race.
Originally seven colts were entered by this owner for the Derby of 1989. If they had been left in the race after the first Tuesday in last month an additional liability of £25 would have been incurred for each.
ONLY THREE-LEFT.
It was decided to leave in only three of the number, and it is a coin- cidence that two of the colts who dis--- appeared from the race ran with dis- tinction at Goodwood a few weeks later. These were Cockpit and Cou- gar, the latter of whom put up very good race when finishing second to Panorama in the Lavant Stakes.
Fortunately, Lord Derby did not take out Heliopolis, who gave every indication in his race this week that he will train on into # high-class three-year-old. Other surviving ·en- trants for the Derby belonging: - to this owner are Tamworth, a colt by Bosworth out of Pladda ́ (dam. of Plassy) and Scepter'd Isle, who is by Bosworth out of Fair Tele.
The former of these has not, yet been seen on this
but gracocourse, Scepter'd Isle. has-been unplaced in two races. Lord Derby's filly Easy Going, who won so aaally on the Knavesmíre on Wednesday, is engaged both in the One Thousand Guiness and the Oaks.
ST. MAGNUS SOLD
After St. Magnus had brilliantly won the Queen Anne Stakes at Ascot, it became known that he was likely to be sent overseas before the end of the season. It is now announced that Lord Derby has told him to go to Aus- tralia, and he is shortly to leave the Stanley House stable
