THE M.C.C. HONOURS HAMMOND

Lord: Baldwin, president of the M.C.C., breaks fresh ground in intimating to W. R. Ham- mond that he is nominating him for membership of the M.C.C. A rare compliment to England's greatest cricketer, greater in light of the conser- vatism supposed to enshroud the inner circles at Lord's.

Last year W. R. Hammond ap- peared as a professional. Now an amateur, and captain of England, he played the highest innings on re- cord against any Australian Eleven in the Lord's Test..

Such an innings by the captain, when a tight corner was still, tight- ening, merits, high recognition. It has had its influence in inducing the M.C.C. president to take this step.

Right through the world the M.C.C. action will touch a populaṛ chord. It does honour to the M.C.C. as well

as to Hammond and the team he is leading against Aus- tralia.

When Lord Baldwin was Prime Minister of England he and his wife were uncommonly keen en- thusiasts in Test cricket. He makes a very fine, well-informed speech at cricket gatherings, his knowledge of the game, and its personalities being incomparably greater than that of nine out of ten men in public. life in this country.
